I love both, and want to learn how to play one of them well.
I have some basic guitar skills, but they are very, very limited.
The only other instrument I play is the piano.

ukulele. My friend is trying to learn the accordion, but he says its the hardest thing he has ever done. you have to push the buttons on one side, you have to push the keys on the other, and you have to push in and out while keeping a consistent beat. I have never even seen an accordion, so I am not the best person to ask, all that information I got from a friend.

both my mother and my father have played the accordion. Apparently it was cool a million years or something like that. I have no personal experience form either, but ukulele must be easier, it's just like a little guitar with only 4 strings, which is even easier.

Most definitely the ukulele. I play both and the uke is so easy and lends itself wonderfully to the three-chord trick (by means of which you can accompany just about any song ever written). Since you already have a little guitar experience maybe its about time you now go and experience a 'little guitar'!
The accordion - however - is my main love. Its a fantastic instrument and is capable of so much more than the uke. You are able to accompany yourself as you play with both hands. It is a most complete instrument. But definitely a bit more difficult to master than the uke.
Whatever you do - have fun!

I can help you. I've been teaching ukulele at Bellarmine University here in Louisville, Kentucky for 8 years. I was head of the guitar department at a local private high school. I've been playing guitar since I was 7 years old. My husband gave me a $2000.00 uke for my birthday read the story at http://www.allmarylou.com I wanted all my students to have the most perfect sounding uke (like my $2000.00 handmade uke) at a very resaonable price. I searched the world over literally. I have tried them all. Looking for a GREAT sound, at a GREAT price. I have been endorsing Lanikai Ukuleles for over 6 years now because the ukes meet all my expectations. Let me a sure you, you can't go wrong with a Lanikai uke.
You need to consider what type of uke, you want to purchase. A soprano, concert, tenor and banjo uke are all played the same and tuned GCEA from top string to bottom string. The Baritone uke is the largest uke and is really the first four strings of the guitar, tuned from top to bottom strings, DGBE. You will be playing the baritone ukulele which is really playing the guitar without the bass strings, the 5th and 6th strings and not steel strings.
The beginer soprano, I start my students with at Bellarmine University is the Lanikai LU-11. It is like the LU-21 just without some of the fancy finishing. These are around $40.00/
{ut all the money you can afford into the uke. A case or gig bag is important but can wait. You can keep your uke in a old gym bag or in the box. Make sure your investment is toward the price of the uke. Really, really cheap ukes won't stay in tune and don't sound good at all. Go to http://www.lanikaiukes.com to download my FREE UKE booklets. You can also view ukes there too. A good place to buy ukes on line is http://www.ukuleleworld.com tell Roy T. Cone I sent you, he will work something out with you. I have worked with country star Keith Urban, read the article at http://www.capitolrecords.com he played uke at 5 years old. To listen to my uke music go to http://www.cdbaby.com I have written 5 uke books published by Mel Bay and books 1 and 2 have been on the music book seller list for years. You can play uke in just 3 minutes without reading music. If you need more info email me at musiclou42@msn.com
